THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT

 The Building Department is responsible for the administration of all laws, ordinances, and regulations concerning the construction, maintenance and safety of all buildings and equipment including electrical, plumbing, housing, and mechanical trades, and compliance with zoning laws. Permits are required for all alterations and new construction.

Contractor Registration 

• Contractor Registration- Contractors must be licensed through the State of Michigan and registered annually with the City of Westland. Companies must submit a completed Application for Registration or Renewal of Residential Builders, Residential Maintenance & Alteration Contractors for processing.

• Building Permits - An Application for Plan Examination & Building Permit must be completed and submitted for review (allow 7-10 days for review) to obtain a building permit.  A non-refundable deposit must accompany permit to be reviewed.

Home Resale Program:

• Home Resale Program - The City of Westland requires a Certificate of Occupancy for residential dwellings. Click here for requirements to buy or sell a house in Westland.

Opening a Business:

• Opening a Business - The City of Westland requires businesses to have a Certificate of Occupancy (Zoning Compliance) before opening a new business. The Zoning Compliance assures compliance with city zoning requirements. An Application for Zoning Certificate and $180.00 processing fee must be submitted to the building department to start the inspection process to obtain a valid Certificate of Occupancy. The property will be inspected by five different inspectors. You must get approval from the fire department, mechanical, electrical and plumbing inspectors and then a final from the building inspector. Once you have all five approvals then a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued allowing you to move into the property and open your business.

City Ordinances - The Fire Department is now responsible for enforcement of City Ordinances in the areas of noxious weeds, non-conforming signs, removal and prevention of blight, and property maintenance.  To report a city ordinance complaint, call (734) 713-3767 or go to the City's website and click on the icon on the homepage.
Written warnings are issued to property owners in violation of City Ordinances. If the problem is not corrected, a ticket is issued and the violator is required to appear in District Court. Click here for the full Municipal Code of Ordinances for the City of Westland.

Nationally recognized standards for enforcement have been adopted by the City: Michigan Building Code and Michigan Residential Code, 2009 edition.
