Central City Park Update

Dear Westland Resident,

On Monday, February 11, 2008, Council President James Godbout, members of the Westland City Council, and I held a working session with representatives of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and Wayne County to discuss the results of the fieldwork conducted by Soils Materials Engineers (SME) of Plymouth in November 2007 for Wayne County at Central City Park.

SME reported that groundwater sampling was conducted and groundwater flow determined. The 12-groundwater monitoring wells were sampled for metals and no lead was found in any of the results. SME reported that groundwater was generally encountered at 5.5' to 13' below surface. Groundwater flow was to the northwest and the pond on the park is a recharge area for groundwater.

SME also reported on the 15 methane gas probes that were installed around the perimeter of the park. Nine of the probes were non-detect for methane. The extent of methane gas from decomposing material was determined to the east and south of the park.

SME told City Council it would submit a work plan to MDEQ this week that:

  1. again checks the methane levels in the probes,

  2. samples the groundwater for methane,

  3. places new gas probes north of the park towards the Bailey Center and the District Court, and

  4. installs temporary water probes east of Carlson Road in the right-of-way to assist in the understanding of groundwater depth and groundwater quality.
