Water Sprinkling Ordinance

Here you will find some Frequently Asked Questions about the recently amended ordinance that controls water sprinkling.

1.  Is this a mandatory program?

No.  This is a voluntary program designed to shift water used for sprinkling to historically non-peak times.
However, it is important to know that the water rates Westland residents pay is directly related to when and how much water is used during peak times.  By changing water sprinkling habits we may be able to shift our peak usage times and amounts which may help control future water rates.

2.  When is the sprinkling season?

The sprinkling season runs from May 1st through October 1st of each year

3.  If I participate, when may I use water for sprinkling?

The last number of your address will be used to determine whether your residence is an odd or even number.
Even numbered residence may use water for sprinkling on even numbered days while residences with an address ending in an odd number may water on odd numbered days.  Additionally, when it is your designated day to use water for sprinkling it is requested that you refrain from doing so between 6:00 A.M. and 9:00 A.M. and again between 4:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.

?

Historically, the most water is used daily between 6:00 A.M. and 9:00 A.M. and again between 4:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
Therefore, this ordinance asks that you voluntarily refrain from using water for sprinkling during these periods each day.

5.  When does the City recommend that I do use water for sprinkling?

6.  Why should I participate
?

The water rates Westland residents pay is directly related to when and how much water is used during peak times.  By changing water sprinkling habits we may be able to shift our peak usage times and amounts which may help control future water rates.
