The Rental Registration process assists the City of Westland to preserve the quality of the housing environment. Rental properties are required to register with the City of Westland every three years. The Rental Registration Fee includes an initial inspection and a final inspectionby a City Building Inspector.For a list of items the inspector will be inspecting, click here. Also included in the registration fee is a "Certification of Occupancy", which will be issued after the final approval of aCityBuilding Inspector and a Furnace/Boiler Certificate confirming the *furnace safety and carbon monoxide testhas been performed and turned into the building department. At this time, the unit may be rented out and renters may move in.
*Furnace safety and carbon monoxide test- This is an inspection on thefurnace in the rental property, from a mechanical contracting companythat is registered to do work in the city,that you hire to perform afurnace safety and a carbon monoxide-salt test confirming that there is no carbon monoxide leakage, 0.00 ppm.A required form called a Furnace/Boiler Certificationmust be filled out by the hired mechanical contractor that performs these tests and turned into the building departmentbefore the final approval will be grantedallowing occupancy of a tenant.
Rental dwellings shall not be occupied without a rental dwelling Certificate of Occupancy.
