It all starts here. All developments - subdivisions and condominiums, commercial buildings, and industrial developments - start with the Planning Department. Since the incorporation of the City, the Planning Department has overseen almost 4000 cases. The primary responsibility of the Department is to provide great customer service while applying standards of the Zoning Ordinance, Master Plan, local, county and state regulations to any proposal to assure the best development for the community.
Developers interested in locating in Westland should review the Planning Process. The Planning Commission is a recommending body that usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month. Their recommendations are provided to City Council to aid in their decision-making process. Meetings are broadcast by your local cable provider. Notice of agenda items are published in the Westland Observer and residents are notified by mail if they own property or live within 300 feet of the proposal.
Other duties of the Planning Department include:
Reviewing and planning public improvements.
Providing zoning and Zoning Ordinance information and guidance to assist in the enforcement of Zoning Ordinance requirements.
