A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a law enforcement officer who is assigned to the schools within our city limits.  The main goal of the SRO is to prevent juvenile delinquency by promoting positive relations between youth and law enforcement.  The SRO position encompasses three major components which allow the SRO to achieve this goal: law enforcement, education, and counseling.  These three components allow the SRO to take a proactive approach to law enforcement. SRO's provide all law enforcement duties within the schools.  They educate the students by teaching law related classes and other related subjects in the classrooms and counsel both students and parents on various topics.  The SRO becomes involved in the students' lives as a positive role model.  The intent is that the positive experiences students have with the SRO will bridge the gap between juveniles and law enforcement, and in doing so, help prevent juvenile crime.

The Westland Police Department’s SRO is Officer Neil Egan. Officer Egan has an office inside of John Glenn High School and works closely with students and staff to keep the school safe. Officer Egan also works with all of the other schools within our city and provides the students and staff with police related services and resources.

If you have any questions about a police related school service or concern you can contact Officer Egan at 734-419-2345. Anonymous school related tips about crimes, bullying, narcotics, theft and other issues can be sent via email to schooltips@wlpd.net.

The School Resource Officer is also assigned duties within the Detective Bureau. His duties include follow up on crime with juvenile suspects, prosecution of those suspects and referrals to alternative programs in of juvenile prosecution / court.
