Due to the Extreme Heat over the upcoming week, the City of Westland has opened an emergency cooling center for residents. Cooling Center hours and location.

Westland City Hall, City Parks and the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center are open for our residents. Online services and the City drop boxes are still available for residents to use.  The two drop boxes located at City Hall for bill payments (no cash please) and document drop offs that will be checked daily.  The Senior Friendship Center will continue to be closed until further notice.  Thank you for your patience in this unprecedented challenging time and please stay healthy.

The Department of Public Service has 42 employees with an annual budget of $29.4 million.

The department is responsible for the following:

211 miles of road

39 dirt roads

286 miles of sanitary sewer

305 miles of storm sewer

338 miles of water main

15,124 catch basins and manholes

6,744 sanitary manholes

6,330 water gates

3,147 fire hydrants

The Department of Public Service has 5 divisions:


Construction and Maintenance

The Construction and Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining city roads (this includes the grading, applying chloride and the filling of dirt roads as well as filling potholes and sweeping paved streets), installs and maintains street/traffic signs, trims and removes trees in the right of way, mows roadside weeds, paints crosswalks, and cleans, repairs and restores manholes and catch basins.


The City of Westland does not maintain county or private roads.

            The Engineering Division reviews site plans for new projects, issues permits and conducts construction inspections.



                The Motorpool Division purchases parts and repairs all Department of Public Service vehicles.



                The Sanitation Division coordinates the trash and compost pick-up by a private contractor.


Water and Sewer

                The Water and Sewer Division is responsible for water tap installations, maintenance and replacement of water gates and outside water shut offs, water meter installation, reading and repair, water main repair, cleaning of sanitary sewers and manholes, pump station maintenance, fire hydrant repair, and staking of water service for Miss Dig.
