Member Meeting and Travel Program: Find out the latest offerings at the Friendship Center plus new travel opportunities. Travel broadens the mind and brightens the day! Day trips are planned by the department and accompanied by a staff member. Favorite sites are visited and new adventures too. Four professional tour companies high-light their day drips and preview extended trips at the monthly Member and Travel Meetings held the second Friday of each month. Please register in advance at the front desk-refreshments are served to attendees.
Exercise Programs: The exercise classes offered at the center are very diverse; from "Spinning" (Instructor led indoor cycling to music), Zumba, Cardio Drumming and Jazzercise, to A Matter of Balance, Arthritis, Tai Chi and Yoga. Our fitness room includes a variety of different machines to ensure a complete workout, and is open late four nights a week so those working have access. The center/exercise room is open Monday and Thursday until 9:00 pm and Tuesday and Thursdays until 7:00 pm. Friday the exercise room closes at 5:00 pm; and is open Saturday mornings from 9:00am-12:00noon. The exercise room is closed at 3:00 pm on days we have big events and all day on the Saturdays that are on holiday weekends.
The Friendship Center offers a Golf League and a Bowling League. If it's the outdoors you enjoy, there is a paved walking track through the park behind the center 1/6th of a mile long; for those of you who like to move but don't like "exercise" you can always Line Dance.
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteering is something that enriches the soul and improves the lives of many. Our Angel Wings group makes blankets, booties, gowns and hats for premature babies in five area hospitals. Our Angels Above group takes gently used wedding gowns and creates beautiful outfits for the babies that do not make it. Our "Couponers" for the military cuts coupons and ships them to military bases over seas so our serviceman and women can use them to purchase items at a discount on base. Other volunteers help decorate for events, do the bulletin boards, sell Share The Wealth tickets at parties, help with phone calls, make tax appointments and assist in the kitchen amongst other things. The Friendship Center is always looking for volunteers that share their talents after retiring from their professional careers.
Lifelong Learning: A partnership between the City Of Westland and Wayne County Community College District to offer a program for senior citizens within the community courses that will provide leisure as well as enhanced skills. These courses have included technology classes, a variety of exercise classes, cooking classes, estate planning, nutrition as well as how to use the Internet. All classes offered at the Friendship Center. We are bringing the learning to you!
Other Services: The Center provides services such as a Podiatrist, clothing alterations, glasses repair, blood pressure screening, tele-care, outreach, senior rider assistance program, Medicare/Medicaid assistance, free AARP tax preparation, flu shot clinics, home bound meals, health screenings, and more. Our massage therapist, Sissel Bridges, comes twice a month and does massages by appointment. Sissel is working on her PHD in Spiritual Coaching and has offered other classes such as meditation, herbal healing, aromatherapy, and other holistic programs. Massages are $48 per hour.
The Commission on Aging: The commission is a council of seniors appointed my Mayor William R. Wild, who work closely with the center director. Regular meetings ensure concerns of the community and members are addressed as well as new ideas discussed.
Meals: For our adults in the community that can no longer get out, live alone, are unable to prepare meals for various reasons including temporary such as recovering from a surgery, we offer home bound meals. For adults who enjoy sharing meal time, we offer a congregate meal at the center daily. The meals are prepared by qualified culinary professionals. On occasion, the meal site manager adds a special surprise. For additional information call 734-727-7357
Friendship Center Events: Perhaps one of the things the center is most known for is its social gatherings. The center hosts many events during the year, and while traditional events like our Volunteer Luncheon, Health and Resource Day, Senior Olympics, and The Thanksgiving and Christmas parties, changing things up a bit is a regular occurrence. In the past we have done everything from a fashion show, wreath making, center piece arranging, free monthly movies, an Octoberfest, spring tea, Valentines Day party, Mexican Fiesta, End of Summer potluck, Summer Picnic, Community Trivia, Winter Blues Bash, Fantasy Football and other fun events. It is common to have 400-500 guests attend our Christmas Celebration - our largest and most favored of the year.
Educational Site: The Friendship Center is an educational site for college students. In the past we have hosted students from EMU, MSU, and Madonna University. Students from the various disciplines of Nursing, Social Work and Gerontology have gained practical experience working with Friendship Center participants. Encouraging and assisting our young professionals today, will make tomorrow a good place to be.
For current information, the center puts out a quarterly newsletter. The latest edition is available now in the lobby. Stop in and see us; take a tour. If you think you know what a senior center looks like - come and be pleasantly surprised -
