COMPOSTING - Compost is grass clippings, leaves, yard and garden waste (excluding pumpkins) pruning debris and brush. Contents may be left in the form of five (5) garbage cans or ten (10) compost bags. The total contents cannot exceed 60 lbs. Tree removal not accepted. Do not compost food scraps, animal waste, chemicals or sod. Compost will be picked up the same day as regular trash. Compost must be in cans with a yard waste sticker attached or Kraft type brown bags. Plastic bags WILL NOT be accepted. Compost must be separated from regular household garbage by ten feet. Mixed compost and garbage WILL NOT be picked up.
A separate truck will be picking up compost. Brush or limbs must not be longer than 4 feet nor larger than 3 inches in diameter and must be tied in small bundles with strong cord (no tape). Maximum of eight bundles per week allowed. NO STUMPS OR ROOTS. Cardboard boxes containing compost will not be picked up. Sod, dirt, wood chips or landscaping material (wood chips, mulch, gravel, stone, cement, etc.), vines (of any sort), WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. Residents will have the responsibility of disposal. Bundles of hay/straw MUST be broken down and put into cans or paper bags. Christmas trees will be picked up at the curb for two weeks starting in January following the Christmas holiday.

SNOW REMOVAL - The City may declare a snow emergency if 6" or more of snow has fallen. Vehicles must be removed from city streets for snow plowing. Failure to do so may result in your vehicle being ticketed and/or towed. Major roads are plowed prior to residential streets. Back To Top
SPECIAL PICK-UP - Up to three items of furniture or appliances may be picked up per week. Remove all doors from refrigerators and freezers. No wood, branches, stumps, tree limbs or construction debris will be accepted. To arrange for your Special Pick Up, call DPS at 734-728-1770 and leave a recorded message. Please separate from your regular trash. Carpeting is not a special pick-up. Carpeting must be cut in 4' lengths, rolled and tied up, and set out with regular trash for pick up. LEAF PICK-UP - The city of Westland will not be picking up leaves in the street this year, the leaves Must be bagged and placed at the curb with your regular trash. We are increasing the amount of bags accepted at the curb from 10 bags to 20 bags per week, and will be picking up leaves until December 11,2009 this year. RECYCLING - The Recycling Center, located behind the Economic Growth Center (37095 Marquette), is open all year for Westland residents only. Clean newsprint, plastics (#1 through #7), cans (tin or aluminum), used motor oil, scrap metal, tires, tires on wheels, cardboard, antifreeze, computers, and batteries (automotive, watch, camera, hearing aid, lithium or Ni-Cad batteries will be accepted). No yard, medical or hazardous waste is accepted at the Center. Used Motor Oil, Antifreeze and Transmission fluid can be dropped off during regular hours of operation.

TRASH COLLECTION - All trash and yard waste should be placed neatly in back of the curb before 6:00 a.m. on collection day (10 bags or a 5 can limit). Trash should not be put out earlier than 6:00 p.m. the day before pick-up. Remove empty trash cans the same day after pick-up. Separate yard waste cans, bags, tree trimmings and leaves from regular refuse by at least ten (10) feet. If your trash can is accidentally taken by the sanitation workers, you may call Midwestern Sanitation at 313-561-0303 or DPS at 734-728-1770. Please try to have the Midwestern Sanitation truck number when you call.
Garbage Route Map
Plastic bags of 2-mil strength may only be used for garbage and rubbish and NOT COMPOST. Garbage bags may be purchased at the Economic Growth Center, 37095 Marquette and the Central Fire Station, 36435 Ford Road.
Garbage cans must have handles and shall not be smaller than 10 gallons or more than 32 gallons, or heavier than 60 pounds when loaded. Cardboard boxes, paper bags or yard waste containers may not be used as garbage containers.
Tires must be removed from rims prior to pick-up. Wheel rims are to be called in for Special Pick-up. You are allowed 4 tires without rims to be put to curbside for regular trash pick-up. Carpet, tarps, and rug padding must be bundled and tied not over 4' in length. Carpeting, padding, and tarps must be limited to ten (10) rolls per week. Special pick-up is provided for household furniture and appliances only. All doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers, and emptied. A sticker must be purchased at City Hall for freon removal prior to pick up.
Items NOT accepted include: bricks, concrete blocks, lumber, cement, stones, drywall, gravel, roofing materials, steel structural shapes, bikes of any kind, swing sets of any kind, fencing of any kind, car parts, railroad ties, sod, pallets, dirt of any kind, tree stumps, tree trunks, paint, glass doors, windows, paneling, countertops, kitchen cabinets, flooring, tile of any kind, ceiling tile, and sheds, picnic tables, pianos, pool tables, ping pong tables must be cut into 8ths, hot tubs, dog houses, arcade games.
On dirt streets, all containers must be placed on the street side of the ditch. On paved streets, containers must be placed on the back of curb. Rubbish must NOT be placed directly on paved streets.
Collections are not made on legal holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Garbage collection will be delayed one day if a holiday falls during the week.
Frozen trash: Workers will do the best they can under the circumstances. If the trash is frozen to the ground the crew cannot take it. Due to safety considerations, crews cannot "dig out" frozen materials in trash cans.
Heavy snow: Midwestern Sanitation will send trucks out on schedule except in extreme conditions. Workers will do the best they can under the circumstances. Place rubbish on top of the snow. Bags and cans must be accessible from the road. Dark bags are easiest to see. REMEMBER, have your trash out before 6 a.m. on your trash day. Back To Top

MOVE OUTS/CLEAN OUTS - Effective July 1, 1999, a new ordinance went into effect. All residents will be charged a $300.00 fee, for each time Midwestern Sanitation picks up. To avoid paying this fee, residents must clean up their own trash. Back To Top

WRITTEN NOTICE REQUIREMENT: Furthermore, compliance with Public Act 222 of 2001, an amendment to Michigan's Governmental Immunity Statute 1964 PA 170, as amended MCL 691.1401 to 691.1419, requires that a claimant who wishes to seek compensation for property damage or physical injury resulting from a sewage disposal system event notify the City of Westland, care of Donald Rohraff, Water and Sewer Superintendent, in writing, within 45 days after the date the damage or physical injury was discovered, or in the exercise of reasonable diligence should have been discovered. The written notice shall contain the claimant's name, address and telephone number, the address of the affected property, the date of discovery of any property damages or physical injuries, and a brief description of the claim.
