The Fire Service is built on two key principles: Life Safety and Property Preservation. Our 68 uniformed personnel and 1 civilian personnel are trained and prepared for any situation that would compromise either one of those areas. There are four fire stations throughout the City of Westland that support four engines, four advanced life support rescues and a command vehicle. The City of Westland has been providing advanced life support to our citizens since 1997. In 2011, the fire department responded to over 9700 calls. Approximately 85% of them were medical based. We transport to three major hospitals in the area: St Mary’s (Livonia), Annapolis (Wayne), and Garden City Osteopathic (Garden City). The University of Michigan, St Joseph's Mercy Hospital, Botsford, and Henry Ford are all level 1 or 2 trauma centers that are used for trauma protocol transport.

The Fire Department is divided into 4 divisions: Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention, Training/Education, and EMS. We also play an integral role along with the mayor, police and city directors in Emergency Management. The City of Westland Fire Department also have personnel on multiple specialized teams that train on a regional level. The Western Wayne Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team is designed to provide rescue to trench collapse, building collapse, confined space rescue, urban search and rescue, and high angle rope rescue. The Tactical EMS team works as an integral part of the police SWAT team to provide medical backup for hostage situations or barricaded gunman. The Western Wayne County Hazardous Incident Response Team (WWCHIRT) responds to any event that creates a release of a potential hazardous material |
