| Fire Department | Fire Suppression Division | Public Education Division | Office of Emergency Management | | Fire Suppression Division - The Fire Suppression Division is responsible for all emergency responses. In 2011, there were 9745 alarms of which about 85% are medical based calls. There are sixty two (62) full-time firefighters in the Fire Suppression Division which are separated into three shifts that work a 24-hour day. Each shift consists of a Battalion Chief, four Captains, four Sergeants, and 11-12 firefighters. | | | | The mission of the Fire Department is to "Save Lives and Protect Property". This goal is achieved by regular training, constant review and evaluation of our successes and failures, and the dedicated efforts of all of the firefighters. The Westland Fire Department was the first department in Western Wayne County to provide advanced life support. All fire fighters and fire officers are state-licensed paramedics. We believe strongly in the benefits of training and education. | | The citizens of Westland rely on the Fire Department for all types of emergency and non-emergency responses. These calls vary from multiple alarm apartment fires and hazardous materials response, to medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, stroke, and diabetic emergencies. We also respond to motor vehicle accidents, hazardous material releases, downed power lines and public assistance calls. Response times average 3-4 minutes from time of call to time of arrival on scene from any of our four fire stations.
