Education and Training Division - This division of the fire department has two distinct responsibilities: 1. To train fire suppression personnel on a daily basis in areas that cover everything from basic firefighting operations to advanced rescue. 2. To educate the public through fire safety classes in the schools and one on one training with businesses/civic groups. Fire safety practices, extinguisher use/fire progression, fire escape plans, and fire station tours are available from this division.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING

The training and education division offers a one hour class on the proper use of fire extinguishers in the home or a business. This class is comprised of a combination of classroom discussion that focuses on the theory of fire and examines the types of extinguishers in use today. A live fire prop is used for all class participants to get hands on experience using the proper methods of extinguishment to put out a fire. This opportunity is open to any group of 10 or larger for home use and any business in the City of Westland. Our fire extinguisher training also discusses the role of the employer as stated in 29CFR1910.157 which is the OSHA requirement for using portable fire extinguishers. If you would like to schedule a class, please contact the Training and Education Division at 734 467 3201.
