As part of its ever-expanding Mission:Green initiative, the City of Westland now provides a permanent collection site for area residents, businesses and schools to drop off old electronics.  The drop-off site is located at the Westland Recycling Center at 37137 Marquette.  Items to be collected include Covered Electronic Devices (CEDs) such as computers, monitors, televisions and printers, Eligible Electronic devices (EEDs) such as mobile telephones, computer cables, mouse or keyboards, fax machines, MP3 players, PDF’s, video game consoles, VCR and DVD players, zip drives, scanners, and other devices such as microwaves, telephones, stereos, radios and small household appliances.  No large appliances can be accepted such as air conditioners, stoves, refrigerators, etc. and please no hazardous waste or items containing mercury.   While you’re at the recycling center you will notice that the center has now gone single-stream like our award winning curbside recycling program. Everything gets put into the compactor at the west side of the site unless collection is posted otherwise.

We make it easy to be green here in Westland!!!

There are many ways that Westland citizens can work toward a sustainable future for our community.  One of the more exciting ways is to become a healthy city; or in the case of Mayor Wild’s new program, Passport to a Healthy City,  perhaps the healthiest City in America.

This new campaign is designed to promote healthy, active lifestyles for all of Westland’s residents through the development of fun, convenient programs created from a strong public/private partnership.
Here’s the challenge, Obtain a Passport to a Healthy City.  Complete a program, attend an event or participate in an eligible activity which are available online at http://www.cityofwestland.com/healthy-passport Once you have completed a program or activity get your passport stamped.  Try to fill your passport and… have fun. Earn prizes, discounts and coupon and then… do it all over again.
Let’s all work together for a healthier Westland and let’s make Westland the Healthiest City in America.
The City has, once again, embarked on a new and exciting recycling program.Clothing Box The City of Westland and “Wear It Again” a Canton based textile recycling company have entered into a new partnership collecting and recycling used and discarded clothing, shoes, jackets, boots and belts. These attractive blue containers have been placed in the parking lots of all City buildings in Westland and at the Recycling Center on Marquette.  They are emptied weekly and the City will receive revenue based upon the tonnage collected each month.

“The City of Westland is quickly becoming one of Michigan’s greenest cities”, noted Mayor William R. Wild, “and the City expects the program to generate approximatley $35,000 annually”

The City Council recently approved a one year contract.  Let’s all work together to promote this program to help make Westland an even greener City.

WELCOME GARDENERS AND VOLUNTEERS !!!!

The City of Westland DTE Energy Community Garden is gearing up for  another wonderful l year.

Our second year at our community garden (2011) was very successful with almost 300 volunteers working nearly 1,000 hours.  They harvested a whopping 2,553 pounds of produce that included squash, cucumber, tomato of different varieties, corn, bean, canteloupe, pepper, potato, onion, cabbage and carrot.  All of the produce went to our partners at Gleaner’s Community Foodbank to help feed the needy throughout the metro Detroit area. We exceeded the 2010 harvest!!!!

Thanks to all the volunteers including our resident master gardeners who are always there to lend a helping hand. the City of Westland Youth Assistance Program, all of the DTE employees who are always on site and the groups like Mojo in the Morning who took time out of their day to help tend the garden that feeds the needy.

But not one to rest on their laurels, all of the leaders and volunteers want this year to be even better, and the work has already started.  Keep an eye on Mission:Green’s facebook page for updates.

Our regular community work days will remain the same; Wednesdays from 4-7 pm starting the week of May 20.  Hope to see you there.

If you need any more info or want to schedule a large or small group to volunteer, please contact Marc Zupmore of DTE at zupmorem@dteenergy.com. We look forward to working with you and Happy Gardening!!!

On January 26, 2011, Mayor Wild presented Mr. Jeffrey Spoon and Westland Colonial Village with the coveted Mission:Green Eco-Award. The award was presented to Mr. Spoon for installing the first electric vehicle charging station in Westland, also one of the first in the metro Detroit area.

Plenty of folks were on hand to help Mayor Wild celebrate this wonderful achievement including Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, County Commissioner Joan Gebhardt and City Council member Adam Hammons.

Everyone gathered in the clubhouse of the Westland Colonial Village Apartments located at 8181 N. Wayne Road for the award ceremony and then afterwards were gathered outside to witness the ribbon cutting and view the operation of the charging station on a brand new Chevy Volt electric vehicle brought to the site to see the Charge Point America in action.

Mayor Wild noted that Westland is a City that values being “green” and that installation of this electrical vehicle charging station is a continuation of Mission:Green’s goal of making Westland Michigan’s greenest City.
