Mayor Wild recently announced the installation of new LED street lights in the historic  Annapolis Park subdivision. The new lights, replacing the older incandescent street lights, will not only provide greater visibility to the residents of Annapolis Park but will save the City an estimated $2,100 per year in electricity expenses.
Thirty (30) new lights have been installed with the new lighting fixtures, 103 watt Cobrahead LED as opposed to the old 175 watt mercury vapor lights.
Funding for the $20,000 project came from Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funds and DTE provided the labor at no cost to the City or its residents.  Thanks DTE!!!
In a recent press release, Mayor Wild indicated that this will be the City’s first use of LED energy efficient technology for street lighting and that this pilot project will allow the City to determine the extent of cost savings before moving forward on larger street lighting projects.
One more step toward Westland’s long-term sustainability as it continues its leadership role in Michigan!!!
Are you an owner of a FlexFuel vehicle?  If you are then you are trying to make a difference for our environment, but you also know how hard it is to locate a convenient service station that provides E-85 fuel near your Westland home.  We are proud to announce that another service station in the City of Westland has recently started providing E-85 gas to Westland residents.  The Mobil station at the southeast corner of Ford Road and Hix Road now has an E-85 pump for those that utilize that type of fuel in their vehicle.  The first station to provide E-85 within the city’s boundaries is the Sunoco station at the northwest corner of Merriman Road and Palmer Road.   Thank you to both station owners for providing this service to our sustainabale community.
The Westland Farmer’s Market returned for another successful season in 2012 running from May 3 through October 25.  There were some changes, though, from the last year.  The Market was now located in the west parking lot of City Hall and had longer hours.
Keep an eye out on this page for the dates and times for the upcoming 2013 season.  Thanks to all who came out and took advantage if this wonderful amenity because what could be more “green” than buying fresh produce from local growers.
If you are interested in being a vendor or know someone who might be interested, a vendor application can be downloaded at the City’s website www.cityofwestland.com.

As part of its ever-expanding Mission:Green initiative, the City of Westland now provides a permanent collection site for area residents, businesses and schools to drop off old electronics.  The drop-off site is located at the Westland Recycling Center at 37137 Marquette.  Items to be collected include Covered Electronic Devices (CEDs) such as computers, monitors, televisions and printers, Eligible Electronic devices (EEDs) such as mobile telephones, computer cables, mouse or keyboards, fax machines, MP3 players, PDF’s, video game consoles, VCR and DVD players, zip drives, scanners, and other devices such as microwaves, telephones, stereos, radios and small household appliances.  No large appliances can be accepted such as air conditioners, stoves, refrigerators, etc. and please no hazardous waste or items containing mercury.   While you’re at the recycling center you will notice that the center has now gone single-stream like our award winning curbside recycling program. Everything gets put into the compactor at the west side of the site unless collection is posted otherwise.

We make it easy to be green here in Westland!!!

There are many ways that Westland citizens can work toward a sustainable future for our community.  One of the more exciting ways is to become a healthy city; or in the case of Mayor Wild’s new program, Passport to a Healthy City,  perhaps the healthiest City in America.

This new campaign is designed to promote healthy, active lifestyles for all of Westland’s residents through the development of fun, convenient programs created from a strong public/private partnership.
Here’s the challenge, Obtain a Passport to a Healthy City.  Complete a program, attend an event or participate in an eligible activity which are available online at http://www.cityofwestland.com/healthy-passport Once you have completed a program or activity get your passport stamped.  Try to fill your passport and… have fun. Earn prizes, discounts and coupon and then… do it all over again.
Let’s all work together for a healthier Westland and let’s make Westland the Healthiest City in America.
