The Melvin G. Bailey Recreation Center is the home of the Westland Parks and Recreation Department. The 30,000 square foot facility offers banquet rooms with a capacity of up to 170 people. These rooms are ideal for wedding receptions, bridal showers, graduation parties, etc. We also have smaller meeting rooms that are perfect for seminars, conferences, staff meetings and similar functions that don't require a large venue.

We offer classes such as karate, gymnastics, cheerleading, martial arts, kickboxing, babysitting, aerobics and more.

Our fitness center features free weights and weight machines as well as treadmills, eliptical machines and stationary bicycles.

Mayor William R. Wild is pleased to announce that the Westland City Council adopted the “Good Neighbor Resolution”, which will extend resident rates to Westland and Wayne residents at all of their recreational facilities, at the March 7, 2011 Westland City Council Meeting. The Wayne City Council adopted the “Good Neighbor” resolution at the Wayne City Council Meeting which was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2011.

The “Good Neighbor” Resolution is an effort to create a more comprehensive, sustainable recreation opportunity for residents of the City of Westland and the City of Wayne. The communities will be able to entitle the residents of each community the opportunity to qualify for all rates and promotions at all facilities located within the City of Westland and the City of Wayne, as if they were a resident of that community.

The communities will cross promote the programs of each recreation department, thus creating a larger target audience for their respective programs, classes, facilities and special events.

“The “Good Neighbor” resolution is an opportunity for the City of Westland and the City of Wayne to build upon the partnership these cities have enjoyed, while benefitting residents of both communities,” stated Mayor Wild.
