Developers interested in locating in Westland should review the Planning Process.  The Planning Commission is a recommending body that usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month.  Their recommendations are provided to City Council to aid in their decision-making process.  A schedule of the meetings has been posted.  Meetings are broadcast by your local cable provider.  Notice of agenda items are published in the Westland Observer and residents are notified by mail if they own property or live within 300 feet of the proposal.  The current agenda is available for your information.

Other duties of the Planning Department include:

• Reviewing and planning public improvements.
• Providing zoning and Zoning Ordinance information and guidance to assist in the enforcement of Zoning Ordinance requirements.
• Processes and reviews Applications for Site Plan Approval and Special Land Use Approval.
• Processes and reviews Application for Rezoning.
• Processes Land Division Applications.
• Processes requests for Vacation and Abandonment of streets, alleys and easement for property owners.
• Prepares updates to the City of Westland Master Plan and the Official City of Westland Zoning Map.
• Prepares written reports and technical assistance to Boards and Commissions, including City Council, the Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals.
• Assists in the establishment of Special Authorities.
• Ensures commercial and residential sites comply with approved site plans and landscape plans. 
• Processes Applications for Tree Permit and oversees the City of Westland Tree Preservation Ordinance.
• Assists the citizens of Westland in improving their quality of life.
• Provides zoning verification letters for commercial and industrial properties.
