The Westland Police Department Detective Bureau investigates and apprehends suspects for all types of crime that is committed in the City. While keeping victims at the forefront of all investigations, the Bureau’s main focus is to put together cases that are thorough and complete. While detectives are scheduled to work a 40 hour work week, they are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Bureau is comprised of 1 Detective Lieutenant, 10 Detective Sergeants and 1 School Resource Officer. During 2008, the Detective Bureau investigated over 3,600 cases, obtained 334 Felony Warrants, and handled 839 in custody prisoners. Once a detective is assigned a case for follow-up, they will follow that case all the way through adjudication at the appropriate court. Some of the different types of investigations that are assigned to the Bureau include homicide, robbery, car theft, assault, rape, larceny and fraud. During investigations, evidence collection is often necessary to obtain enough evidence to develop probable cause. Most detectives are trained as evidence technicians. Computers are being used at an exponential rate in the commission of crime. To combat this new and changing technology, a detective has been trained in the area of computer forensics. This training is ongoing as computer technology is changing and updating on a daily basis. Besides investigating crime, the Detective Bureau is tasked with other responsibilities. Some of these tasks include, Liquor Control Commission investigations, internal investigations, background investigations and other tasks as assigned by the Chief of Police. The Westland Police Department has had a successful relationship with First Step over the past 10 years. First Step is a non-profit agency that has a common goal with the police department to lower the incidence of domestic and sexual assault.
