The Patrol Division is the largest and most visible division of the Westland Police Department. This division is responsible for the detection and suppression of crime and disorder. Patrol personnel are first responders to emergency situations and responsible for the following:

  • Initial investigation and reporting
  • Crime scene preservation/ evidence collection
  • Visible patrols
    • Prevent violations of Law and Ordinances
    • Arrest criminal offenders
    • Traffic direction and enforcement
  • Minor traffic crash investigation and reporting
    • Non-Injury Traffic crashes
    • Minor Injury Traffic crashes
    • Hit and run accidents
  • K-9 Officers
    • Tracking
    • Building Search
    • Narcotic Detection
  • Prisoner Management
    • Housing of inmates
    • Transportation to Court
  • Enhanced 911 system
    • Emergency Medical Dispatch

The Patrol Division is made up of 56 sworn officers and 16 civilian dispatchers. This division protects the citizens, businesses and visitors of Westland, while providing 24 hour service 7 days a week.  The division is broken up into four shifts each working 12 hours. Each shift is commanded by a Lieutenant and two sergeants.

 Several officers assigned to the patrol division are cross trained in the areas of K-9 handling, Motorcycle patrol, and Bicycle patrol. Select officers have been trained in the areas of Evidence collection, Perimeter rifle team, Field training officers and Firearms instruction.
