The bureau's functions are: patrolling streets with a concentration on traffic enforcement and an investigative role for traffic accidents involving a death, serious injury or hit & run; licensing ice cream vendors and taxi -cabs; approval of vendors for Christmas tree sales; crossing guard training & programs; 7 motorcycle patrols; all traffic crash data collection; recommendation for all traffic control devices; responding to citizen complaints about traffic violators; and reviews new construction site plans for the smooth flow of vehicular traffic.

The City of Westland has purchased two Decatur Radar Trailers. The Radar Trailers are able to capture the speed of an oncoming vehicle and display it to the approaching driver. These radar trailers can be placed in your neighborhood.
