Major Watersheds in Southeast Michigan
The Rouge River Watershed consists of all land and waterways that drain into the Rouge River. The map shows all the communities within the Rouge River Watershed. Therefore, all the people who live, visit or work in this region have the potential of impacting the Rouge.

Sub-Watershed Map
The City of Westland is one of forty-eight (48) communities located within the Rouge River Watershed. In order to organize and focus efforts and resources to work towards the common goal of a clean Rouge River, the overall watershed has been subdivided into a number of sub-watersheds. The City of Westland lies within two sub-watersheds, the Middle 3 and the Lower 2. The City of Westland encompasses 13,099 acres with approximately 5,500 acres draining into the Lower 2 sub-watershed. The remaining portion of the City drains to the Middle 3 sub-watershed, with a very small area tributary to the Ecorse Creek. The City of Westland has taken an active role in the Sub-Watershed Advisory Groups (SWAGs) and in a leadership role continues to commit significant effort and resources to the remediation efforts of the Rouge River.

Existing Land Use Map for the City of Westland
In 1996, the City of Westland, with the assistance of a consultant, prepared and adopted the updated City of Westland Master Plan. The City of Westland, along with other municipalities, is required to create, adopt and maintain a Master Plan for the physical development of the City, as required by the Municipal Planning Act 285 of the Michigan Public Acts of 1935, as amended. The master plan is designed as a guide for future development and re-developments within the City of Westland. The master plan includes an inventory of the City that is represented in text form but also in the form of an "Existing Land Use Map". This map represents specific land uses within the City of Westland as categorized within the Master Plan indicating the location of existing uses and indicating which parcels have yet to be developed. The location of the Middle Rouge and the Lower Rouge can be clearly seen on the Existing Land Use Map. The Middle Rouge flows through the City of Westland through Hines Park along the Hines Drive corridor, while the Lower Rouge flows through the City north of Michigan Avenue along either side of Merriman Road.

Future Land Use Map for the City of Westland

This map acts as a guide to the City Planner and developers. It is utilized to ensure the appropriate use of vacant property in the future and to ensure that the appropriate use of property whenever a re-development is proposed, while remaining cognizant of surrounding land uses and consistent with the adopted goals and policies of the Master Plan. It is vital to reference this map whenever development or redevelopment occurs to ensure that development within the City of Westland properly addresses storm water issues and does not adversely affect the health and condition of the Rouge River.
