SENIOR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES



 

  • MEALS ON WHEELS - Provides a nutritious hot meal daily (M-F) to homebound seniors. Meals can be delivered on a continuous basis or temporarily. Call 722-7632 before noon and speak to Barbara Ramseur (site manager for meals on wheels) for eligibility requirements.

  • HOME CHORE PROGRAM - A free program that provides outdoor supplemental services to assist seniors to stay in their own homes. This program is for seniors over 60 (no one under 60 may be residing in the home to qualify) and unable to PHYSICALLY do the work AND unable to FINANCIALLY afford to have it done. Service includes snow removal from drive and walkways (must have snowed over 4"), lawn mowing, and leaf raking. Seniors must call when all leaves are down - the leaf raking service will only be provided one time a year. Call 722-7628 to inquire.

  • TELECARE REASSURANCE - The Telecare Program is a program designed to check on homebound seniors in the community. This friendly reassurance telephone program eases the minds of family members and seniors, knowing a caring call by a Friendship Center staff member or volunteer comes on a regular basis. The calls not only lift the spirits of the recipient but also serve as an extra "safety" check, making sure the homebound senior is able to answer the phone and is safe.   • DAILY CONGREGATE MEALS - Lunches served daily 11:30am. Provides a nutritious meal where older adults can socialize with peers. Reserve meal by calling 722-7362 before noon the business day before. If seniors do not make a reservation, and they wish to have a lunch they can go on stand-by - if there is enough to serve them, we are happy to oblige.   • TRAVEL PROGRAMS - Trips are planned by the department using a professional tour company. Speakers also give presentations and tour trips at monthly programs. Back to Top                                       
  • VIP - The Visually Impaired Persons is a support group that meets at the Friendship Center on Fridays at 11:30am. The group is very diverse, but all participants are visually challenged by diseases that effect their sight, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, etc. The group is picked up by Nankin Transit each week, brought to the Center and then delivered back home after the meeting. They are very welcoming, and are eager for new members. They often meet for lunch, or have excursions outside the center. Back to Top


  • NATIONAL SENIOR HEALTH AND FITNESS DAY - combines a morning of screenings and information regarding various products offered through several vendors in the area, with a fun walk or similar activity.  The Center offers a nutritious luncheon to end the day. Back to Top


  • BLOOD PRESSURE & DIABETES SCREENING - Done on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. in the computer room by the Westland Fire Department or a representative from Four Seasons or Heartland.  An excellent way to keep track of blood sugar levels, and keep a blood pressure record. Knowing there is a problem is half the battle - so keep on top of these important readings! Back to Top


  • FLU SHOTS - There is minimally one flu-shot clinic offered through the Friendship Center each year, in October or November. Participants are covered under traditional Medicare, and some with an Medicare HMO are also included. Flu shots are given by appointment only. Back to Top


  • HEALTH SCREENINGS - There is usually one formal health screening per year, however, many screenings are also available through the National Senior Health and Fitness Day event in May. Regular blood pressure screenings and diabetes screenings occur on a weekly basis at the the center. Back to Top


  • MASSAGES - are offered through the center at $44.00 per hour, or $22.00 per half hour. The massage therapist is also willing to do facials. If you wish to have a facial you must specify that in advance so the massage therapist brings the necessary supplies. Many different massages are available including deep tissue, and Swedish relaxation massage. Massages are scheduled the second or fourth Tuesday. Massages have been recognized by the medical community to help with a variety of physical ailments. A nice way to treat yourself, or a great gift for the older adults in your life.  Back to Top


  • COSMETOLOGIST - Our cosmetologist is a long standing service provider through the center. Susie washes, cuts, and styles both men and women's hair. Coloring and perms are also offered as well as in home service, if need be, to those who permanently or temporarily are homebound. Reasonable rates. Make you appointment for services at the center by calling 722-7632 or by stopping by the front desk at the Friendship Center.  Back to Top                                                                                                       
  •  INFORMATION AND REFERRAL - The Center is the link between many programs offered through different organizations and businesses.  If a particular service or program is not offered directly through the center, we are happy to give you information as to where you might obtain it. Back to Top


  • LEGAL AID - An attorney visits the center once a month.  Generally, he performs simple legal services such as drawing up a will.  There is a 15 minute free consultation which may help determine exactly what is needed, or if you need specialized advice.  Back to Top


  • EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS - The Friendship Center works closely with surrounding businesses, organizations, and individuals that specialize in services relating to the older adult.  Informational or educational seminars focusing on topics such as: Medicare Part "D", the conversion of televisions from analog to digital, managing diabetes, and a variety of special interest topics, helps to keep older adults up to date on ever changing issues.  Back to Top


  • NOTARY SERVICE - Complementary if member of the Center (Monday through Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm).  There is a $5.00 fee for non-members.  Notary service is not available between 2:00pm - 3:00pm  Appointments are not necessary but advised.  Back to Top


  • AARP TAX PREPARATION - This program is offered free to anyone in the community who wishes to have their taxes prepared free of charge. This site is a E-file site only. Appointments are necessary. Generally, the tax return service offered through AARP is for simple returns. Those individuals with lengthy returns, many rental properties or investments are encourage to have a CPA or professional firm complete their returns. There is no age or income requirement. The site manager has discretion over what returns they are willing and able to complete. Taxes this year will be done on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please call for an appointment. Unfortunately, the preparers are only on site during the day the center offers the service so any tax question regarding a return must be taken by a staff person, and returned by a preparer at their convenience.  Back to Top


  • ALTERATIONS - Alterations are offered through the center by an accomplished seamstress. No appointment necessary - walk-ins are welcome. Reasonable rates.  Back to Top


  • HALL RENTALS - The Friendship Center is ideal for baby showers, meetings, graduation parties, and bridal showers. There is no alcohol permitted in the building, and the Friendship Center is smoke-free. A large electronic screen and state of the art projector system offers an ideal location for business presentations. Recessed walls make it possible to host events up to 500.  Call Marilyn at 722-7628 to check availability of rooms.  Back to Top
