| The Fire Service is built on two key principles: Life Safety and Property Preservation. Our 75 uniformed personnel and 2 civilian personnel are trained and prepared for any situation that would compromise either one of those areas. There are 5 fire stations throughout the City of Westland that support 5 engines, 4 advanced life support rescues and a command vehicle. The City of Westland has been providing advanced life support to our citizens since 1997. In 2007, the fire department responded to over 8900 calls. Approximately 80% of them were medical based. We transport to three major hospitals in the area: St Mary’s (Livonia), Annapolis (Wayne), and Garden City Osteopathic (Garden City). The University of Michigan and St Joe’s also provide transport via helicopter if a trauma or burn center is required. |

The Fire Department is divided into 4 divisions: Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention, Public Education/Training, and EMS. We also play an integral role along with the mayor, police and city directors in Emergency Management. The Emergency Operations Center is located at the Melvin G Bailey Center. We also have three specialized teams that train on a regional level. The MUSAR team is designed to provide rescue to trench collapse, building collapse, confined space rescue, urban search and rescue, and high angle rope rescue. The Tactical EMS team works as an integral part of the police SWAT team to provide medical backup for hostage situations or barricaded gunman. The HAZMAT team responds to any event that creates a release of a potential hazardous material
