The mission of the Fire Department is to "Save Lives and Protect Property". This goal is achieved by regular training, constant review and evaluation of our successes and failures, and the dedicated efforts of all of the firefighters. The Westland Fire Department was the first department in Western Wayne County to provide advanced life support. All firefighters are state-licensed paramedics, as are 70% of the officers. We believe strongly in the benefits of training and education.

The community relies heavily on the Fire Department for all types of emergency responses, from multiple alarm apartment fires and hazardous materials response, to medical emergencies such as heart attacks and motor vehicle accidents, to routine public assistance calls. A typical response time, whether for fire or medical, is usually between 3 and 4 minutes.
