The Planning Department is a customer service oriented Department that provides a variety of services to the community. The primary objectives of the Planning Department are to plan for land use, coordinate the physical development of the City of Westland and prepare studies and recommendations for City planning and zoning issues. This is accomplished with the guidance of the City of Westland's Master Plan and in accordance with the Zoning Ordinance of the City of Westland. All development and redevelopment proposals are coordinated and reviewed by the Planning Department as part of the Planning Process.

In achieving these objectives, the Planning Department provides the following services:
Provides information to the public about the development and redevelopment of land.
Processes requests for Vacation and Abandonment of streets, alleys and easement for property owners.
Prepares updates to the City of Westland Master Plan and the Official City of Westland Zoning Map.
Prepares written reports and technical assistance to Boards and Commissions, including City Council, the Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Assists in the establishment of Special Authorities.
Ensures commercial and residential sites comply with approved site plans and landscape plans.
