Detective Bureau - The bureau detects, investigates, and apprehends suspects for all types of crimes committed in the City. The Bureau is involved with Crime Stoppers, a private, non -profit organization that teams the police with citizen volunteers and financial support from the business community. Staffed with citizen volunteers, the police benefit by gaining valuable information concerning open criminal cases. Crime Stoppers provides up to $1,000 in cash for anonymous tips that lead to an arrest on any criminal cases. Hundreds of dollars have been distributed for tips used to solve cases in Westland. First Step Victim Advocacy - Advocate Judith Dahn (734)467-5619 provides crisis counseling, safety planning and support services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The advocate will assist with: police reports, personal protection orders, explaining the court process, accompanying victims to court as well as linking victims to other free First Step services including: safe shelter, counseling for both adults and children for domestic and sexual violence, and a host of other services. Traffic Bureau - The bureau's functions are: patrolling streets with a concentration on traffic enforcement and an investigative role for traffic accidents involving a death, serious injury or hit & run; licensing ice cream vendors and taxi -cabs; approval of vendors for Christmas tree sales; crossing guard training & programs; 10 motorcycle patrols; all traffic crash data collection; recommendation for all traffic control devices; responding to citizen complaints about traffic violators; and reviews new construction site plans for the smooth flow of vehicular traffic. Animal Control - The police department employs two animal control officers. These officers are tasked with investigating complaints and/or taking possible enforcement action for incidents involving animal bites, stray animals, injured animals, and animal licensing. The animal control officers are scheduled to work Monday thru Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The officers are normally on patrol handling calls for service during those hours; however, they do have the ability to receive telephone messages. If you have a question about the ordinances governing animals in the City of Westland, you may direct a call to either animal control officer by calling the department’s non-emergency number, (734) 722-9600.
Animal control officers will not assist with the trapping of wild animals. Animal trapping is regulated by the Department of Natural Resources, and citizens engaging in this activity must conform with that department’s guidelines. Youth Assistance Program - The Westland Youth Assistance Program is located at 36701 Ford Road in an addition to the Westland Police Department. The separate glass entrance facing City Hall and comfortable waiting area allows for private, professional, environment to assist families in Westland.
Westland youth ages 7 through 16 are referred to Youth Assistance by the Police, Courts, Schools, Parents, and other Agencies. Once referred, an intake appointment is scheduled to explain the program’s services to the youth and parents (guardians), and to offer them the opportunity to discuss their concerns and to ask questions. All information discussed is CONFIDENTIAL. ALL SERVICES ARE FREE TO WESTLAND RESIDENTS.
If the assessment determines that a youth is appropriate for Youth Assistance, the following services may be required for the youth:
- Life Choices Classes
- Drug Screens
- Supervised Community Work Service
- Jail/Prison Tour
- Team Adventure Challenge
- Mentoring
- Karate
- Counseling
Parents are required to participate in a Parenting Skills and Support Group.
The Westland Youth Assistance Program is funded by the City of Westland with additional funds from Wayne County, the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Target Corporation, and North Bros. Ford.

Drug Activity - Metro Street Enforcement Team - MSET started in 1992. Officers in the communities of Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, Westland, and Wayne County Sheriff's Department assist participating communities with criminal surveillance, fugitive apprehension, drug investigations, and major complicated criminal cases. MSET recently joined the Southeast Michigan Safe Streets Initiative to address critical drug trafficking.
Special Investigation Unit - (SIU) - The unit's primary responsibility is the investigation and prosecution of narcotics cases including interviews, interrogations, drug evidence processing, and case preparation of in-custody felony drug prisoners. Ordinance Enforcement - The department responds to complaints about abandoned vehicles only. If you're reporting an abandoned vehicle, we need to know vehicle location, type, color, and license plate number (if possible). The vehicle will be tagged and if not removed within 72 hours, it will be impounded. Complaints can be made by calling (734) 722 -9600.

Citizen's Police Academy - The Westland Police Department Citizen's Police Academy is a partnership with the community. Applicants selected to attend this program must be 18 years of age or older and live, work, or own a business in the City of Westland. In 12 sessions the student is introduced to various aspects of the Westland Police Department. Classes include lectures and hands-on experience in police patrol operations, use of force issues, pursuit driving, crime scene investigations, SWAT tactics, K-9 and more. There is also an optional 12-hour ride along with an on-duty officer. Upon graduation, each student receives a certificate of completion at a ceremony attended by family, local dignitaries and Academy Instructors.
The Citizen's Police Academy classes will be scheduled on an as needed basis. Exact dates will be announced on the community cable station (CATV) as well on this web site. Citizen's Police Academy Applications are available for download (Adobe PDF format) and will be accepted year round at the police department front desk. Class sizes will be limited.
