Fire Department |  Fire Suppression Division |  Public Education Division
Office of Emergency Management
Public Education Division - Established in 1980, the Public Education Division, provides outreach and awareness programs to: (1) reduce the number of fires, (2) reduce the dollar loss due to fires, and most importantly, (3) reduce the loss of life and injuries due to fires. The mission statement is "life safety and property conservation".

Through quality programs promoting life safety, the Public Education Division has had contact with over 11,500 citizens including over 8,600 students throughout the Wayne-Westland School District, the Livonia School District, and preschools in 2001. Fire safety in the schools and the community is promoted through special events such as the Fire Safety House Program, Fire Prevention Week activities, and other community events. For low-income Westland residents who own their homes, free smoke detectors may be available.

In the year 2003 the Public Education Division provided 263 programs and education classes to the community. The following is a breakdown of the programs that were provided:

In 2001, the Westland Fire Department donated four Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to the Westland Center Security who have since recorded two lives saved. Also in the past year, the Fire Department has donated an AED to the Westland Municipal Golf Course and has trained personnel in its use. The Senior Friendship Center and the 18th District Court have also purchased AEDs and have received training. In the near future, we hope to add AEDs and train personnel in both the Bailey Recreation Building and Westland City Hall.

Adult Fire Safety Programs - Programs for Westland businesses and residents can be conducted at a place of your choice, or arrangements can be attempted to secure a location. Reservations must be made with the Westland Fire Department two weeks in advance. Most programs are 45-60 minutes in length. No live fires. Presentations are supplemented with videotapes, handouts, brochures, and appropriate hands-on materials. Some items may be made available on a loan basis.

Emergency Preparedness - The program is designed to deal with emergency preparedness for multi-hazards such as a fire from a natural disaster.

Preschool Programs - Programs provided for preschool students include information on 911, what to do in an emergency, Stop-Drop-and Roll, how to escape a fire, and dangers of fire play. Parents are always encouraged to attend. A visit by a fire engine and rescue vehicle may be included.

School Age Programs - Elementary School age appropriate Fire Safety programs can be scheduled for all grades. For 4th and 5th Grade Classes - A Fire Safety House Program has been developed to provide students with a comprehensive training activity including a hands-on learning experience. The program consists of three separate classes, two in the classroom, and one on location at our Fire Safety House, which can be filled with non-toxic smoke.

Middle and High School Programs - Programs are available for students in middle school such as fire safety, CPR, first aid, babysitter safety, kitchen safety, and career information.

Medical First Responder Course - A student completing the Medical First Responder Course can apply to the State of Michigan for a Medical First Responder License after passing a written and practical exam. The Medical First Responder Course is a 65-hour course, giving students the ability to respond and provide basic emergency care in life-threatening situations. This program was provided to the students at no expense. The Public Education Division is looking forward to providing this program again in the winter of 2002.

Juvenile Firesetter Intervention - Support is given to the families whose children have been involved in fires. The division investigates all juvenile fires, provides screening, counseling, and fire safety education to the child and his/her family. Children who cause fires do so for many reasons: curiosity about fire, attention-seeking behavior, and in a very few cases, mental difficulties. The division has individuals trained to assess, identify, and make informed judgments on the fire-setting child's needs. Child and family educational assistance is used to help bring about a successful conclusion to a most life-threatening situation.

Fire Evacuation Planning - Businesses and other organizations are assisted in the development and review of fire response and evacuation plans.

Special Events - A fire safety booth may be available for educational events, such as Health and Safety Fairs. Emergency Services personnel and equipment (paramedics, paramedics on bicycles, blood pressures) may also be available for special events.
