Police Explorers
Law Enforcement Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women who are at least 14 years of age but have not yet reached their 21st birthday.
Tasks & Responsibilities
Some of the things our Volunteer Police Explorers do include:
- D.A.R.E Activities
- Ride Along with Uniformed Patrol Officers
- Undercover Stings dealing with alcohol and tobacco sales to minors
- Various community details
- Youth Assistance
Training
In addition, our Police Explorers will go through a number of Police Officer training classes to name a few:
- Accident investigation
- Alcohol detection
- Booking of prisoners
- Defensive tactics
- Domestic violence
- Firearms training
- Officer safety
- S.W.A.T. training
Application
If you are between the ages of 14 through 21 and wish to become a Westland Police Explorer Please fill out an application (PDF) and submit it at the front desk of the Westland Police Department located at 36701 Ford Road. Please seal your application in an envelope and address it to one of the following:

- Officer James Compton
- Officer Jeff Kropodra
- Officer Jennifer Schurig
- Officer Matt Allen
Your application will be reviewed and you will be contacted for an interview. Due to the nature of the Police Explorer Program, we will not accept anyone with a prior criminal history. Minor Traffic Violations will not disqualify an applicant; however, it will be addressed.
Following Review
Once you complete the application you may drop it off at the Police Department Front Desk. After your application is reviewed and approved you will be invited to attend an Explorer Meeting.
